With stronger engagement of indigenous peoples across marine and coastal areas to research and opportunities for economic and social development, cultural licence or licence from indigenous peoples most effected by the risks associated with economic growth requires an intent by scientists, local and central government and industry to recognise the status of indigenous people in the planning, co-design and application of projects. This presentation will define cultural licence and outline the requirements to be able to demonstrate cultural licence across marine research. This will presentation will provide a New Zealand indigenous perspective and focus on engagement with first nations peoples in marine and ocean research.
