Janelle V Eagle Australian Marine Sciences Association Annual Meeting 2023

Janelle V Eagle

Dr Janelle Eagle is an Environment Specialist in NOPSEMA’s Offshore Projects & Seismic team within the Environment, Renewables and Decommissioning division. A qualified marine ecologist, Dr Eagle’s career started in fish and coral reef research at James Cook University in Queensland. After moving into marine environmental impact assessment consulting focussing on oil and gas projects in Western Australia, she then joined NOPSEMA where she works to ensure the offshore energy sector takes effective measures to protect the marine environment while undertaking oil and gas activities around Australia. Dr Eagle is part of team that provides advice to government in relation to the future assessment, monitoring, and management of environmental impacts from the development of large-scale offshore renewables projects, including wind farms. This is achieved by pulling together published science, government policy and knowledge gained from regulating oil and gas projects to ensure environmental protection laws are met. She is optimistic that with cooperation between industry and consultants, the scientific community and government, learnings from oil and gas regulation can be applied to renewable energy projects in Australia. This will ensure a timely transition to renewable energy that does not compromise the many values and sensitivities of Australia’s unique marine environment.
